1) According to the interview, where did Malala's love for education come from?

3) What does Malala say was the inspiration for her courage in speaking out against the Taliban?

4) In the interview, Jon Stewart sarcastically jokes that, "Your [Malala's] love of education reminds him so much of my kids...not so much." Do you think children in the United States appreciate education as much as Malala and other girls in Pakistan do? Why or why not?

5) Malala says, "In my opinion, the solution that would work to fight all these wars and all these problems that people are facing is only education." Do you agree with her? Why or why not?

Today in class, students were introduced to the memoir I Am Malala about a girl's heroic stand against violence and oppression against women in Pakistan. Students began reading the memoir as a whole class, following along with the audiobook companion to the book.

1) Although Pakistan is officially an Islamic Republic, what are at least three examples of the cultural diversity of Pakistan?

2) From 1885 to 1947, who controlled the territory that today makes up Pakistan? When Pakistan became independent, who were they separated from (to make another new country)?

3) How is the way in which Pakistan became independent similar or different to the UN Partition Plan of 1947? Based on your understanding of that plan, what inferences can you make about the possible conflicts Pakistan would have after it was separated?

4) In the War on Terror, Pakistan is seen as an ally to the United States, but according to the NATO report on page 3 of the article, why would the United States be concerned about the success of this alliance?

5) What kinds of natural disasters is Pakistan likely to suffer from? Give two examples of the kind of damage these natural disasters have caused to Pakistan in the past.

6) Looking at the maps on pages 5 and 6 of the article, which countries border Pakistan? Which countries do you see potential conflicts with Pakistan? Why? Be specific in your examples from the maps.
